“A good aircraft must be a good-looking one,” said Dassault, a French aircraft designer. The same goes for all in one solar street lamps.

Taking the all in one solar street lamp as an example, the application of solar LED street lamp has attracted more and more customers’ attention and favor, but there are some problems in the structural design, lighting creativity, modeling design and other aspects, which has caused considerable confusion to the use and selection of customers. We discuss the five problems existing in the structure and appearance design of all in one solar street light and put forward the corresponding solutions. First, the surface treatment of materials is difficult to withstand the erosion of a harsh environment for a long time. All lamps are directly installed outdoors, which may encounter acid rain, sandstorm, Blizzard, insolation, and other harsh environments.

Due to the large proportion of aluminum alloy, although its corrosion resistance has been greatly improved after anodizing treatment, it is still impossible to ensure that the oxide film will not be damaged when the lamp is installed. When the oxide film is damaged, the active chemical properties of aluminum alloy can be shown. In some places with relatively large pollution, acid rain is easy to occur, and acid water will accumulate in some gaps on the lamp body. The evaporation of acid water in the gaps will corrode the lamp body after rain and sunny days. The corroded lamp body not only affects the appearance, heat dissipation, but also mechanical properties.

Second, the regular rectangular appearance design does not meet the requirements of wind resistance. The rectangular shape mentioned here refers to the rectangular shape of the lamps and lanterns, and each face presents a large area of a plane. Such a plane is easy to bear force when the wind blows vertically from a plane, its plane cannot differentiate the wind, thus causing pressure on the lamp pole and the fixed structure of lamps and lanterns. This pressure is not obvious in the general situation, but when the lamp pole after a long time of aging and corrosion, if in the coastal areas of a typhoon, there may be a tilt or bending lamp pole or the risk of falling lamps.

Thirdly, the failure rate of the LED street lamp caused by gluing treatment is high. Gluing treatment mainly refers to the need to apply a lot of industrial glue to make water-proof in the production process due to the congenital profile design reasons, which often leads to three problems: 1. Uneven gluing, resulting in water leakage;

2. Long-term use of lamps, resulting in aging of internal glue, resulting in weakening or complete loss of water-proof function ;

3. Too much gluing and untidy interior of the lamp body may cause poor heat dissipation and affect the lithium battery and LED lamp beads.

This will lead to water damage to the battery on rainy days or LED aging faster, higher failure rate.

 

Fourth, the overall design brings later maintenance difficulties. Integral design refers to the lamp the entire light source cavity is designed as an unmaintainable whole, or the light source module or the battery package is designed as an unmaintainable whole. The practice in recent years shows that it is impossible for LED lamps to be 100% maintenance-free. And this kind of integral type lamps and lanterns just cannot maintain, after general street lamp appears fault, cannot finish the maintenance task in the overhead car, want to change the whole lamp to return to manufacturer repair. This approach forces the manufacturer to become both a manufacturer and a service provider, at a great cost.

We discussed some solutions to these five problems. For the first and second problems, we believe that the lamps and lanterns need to be structural-type waterproof, reduce the amount of glue, and as far as possible to make a streamlined multi-angle lamp body, to have a reasonable design of heat dissipation holes and diversion surface. In this way, the product has three advantages: 1, the streamlined shape is conducive to direct most of the water to the ground, reducing the corrosion of acid and alkali substances on the lamps; 2, the streamlined surface can greatly reduce the accumulation of dust and snow above, conducive to heat dissipation and reduce the lamp pole and lamp pressure; 3, the multi-angle surface can differentiate the wind force into multiple directions, reducing the pressure of lamp poles and lamps.

For the third and fourth problems, we suggest that the overall design of lamps should be replaced by modular design.

For the fifth problem, it is suggested that the design of luminaires should be considered from the perspective of operators, and attention should be paid to details in the design.

Class 0 LED Luminaire

(2) Features and standard requirements for Class 2 lamps:

  1. Such a luminaire may have one of the following forms:

a) A luminaire with a complete housing made of durable and sturdy insulating material that encloses all metal parts, except that small parts such as nameplates, screws and rivets are completely isolated from live parts with insulating material. Insulation is at least equivalent to reinforced insulation. Such a luminaire is called an insulated shell type I luminaire.

b) Lamps with sturdy all-metal enclosures are all double-insulated inside, except for those parts where double-insulation is obviously not feasible. Such luminaires are referred to as metal housing type II luminaires.

c) A luminaire having a combination of a) and b) above.

d)Insulated shell-type n lamps can form part or all of supplementary insulation or reinforced insulation.

e)The luminaire is still considered as a Class II luminaire if it is grounded to aid starting, rather than directly connected to accessible metal parts. The lamp cap housing and the light source’s starting band are not considered to be easily accessible metal parts, except those which are determined to be live parts by tests.

f)If a lamp with double insulation and/or reinforced insulation has a unified ground terminal or ground contact, the lamp has a Class I structure. However, if a fixed type II luminaire is used in a loop installation, it may have an internal terminal block. This terminal is used to maintain the electrical continuity of the ground conductor, and this ground conductor does not terminate in the luminaire. Internal terminal blocks are isolated from accessible metal through Class II insulation.

Class III Luminaire

The power supply used is a safety extra-low voltage, and no low voltage higher than SELV (36V) is generated inside the lamp: Convert the mains power to a low voltage of 36v (by adding a transformer).

Waterproof is the basic requirement for Outdoor Solar Lights products.

Outdoor solar lights are commonly used as outdoor applications. Water is inevitable cannot be avoided in outdoor locations. Therefore, a relatively higher level of waterproofing is required in order to achieve better performance in such environmental conditions. Often, we come across the label of IP65, IP66, and even IP67 in product packing. So, is the higher the waterproof level, the better for the product?

(1) Waterproof is Necessary for Solar Outdoor Products

For the above question, first, we need to understand why waterproofing is needed. During the long-term use of outdoor solar lamps, some liquid usually will condense on the solar-powered products due to the influence of day and night temperature changes. As we know that from middle school, when gas or vapor condenses or is condensed, it changes into a liquid.
In addition, the water of rainfall will splash directly onto the solar light product. If typhoons or hurricanes patronize to an area, then strong storms will bring water to try to destroy products exposed in unsheltered place. Therefore, there must be a sufficiently strong level of waterproof for the outdoor lighting system.

(2) Understand Waterproof Standards to Facilitate Product Selection

In this regard, we need to understand what the standard of waterproofing is. What kind of impact can each level of waterproof protect against for outdoor solar lighting?

For example, there is a product with IP65 label. Let’s see the meaning of IP, 6, 5 respectively.

The IP (INGRESS PROTECTION) protection level system was drafted by the IEC (INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION), which classifies electrical appliances according to their dust and moisture resistance characteristics. The IP protection level mark is composed of two numbers.

(3) General Advice When Selecting the Product Waterproof Level

High waterproof rating means a high manufacturing cost naturally. In order to deal with extreme weather that may encounter, expensive outdoor solar lights products with high waterproof rating are the utmost choices.
A) If there is not much storm and rain in an area and it is not a place often by typhoons/hurricanes, you can choose a solar outside lights product with a lower waterproof level of course. In desert zone of North Africa and the Middle East, the waterproof rating can be relatively low. All our products can meet the weather conditions in these places. For example, the S2 series can easily handle the conditions.
B) If it is in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, or the Pacific Islands, then high grade waterproof products need to be considered.

Waterproofing can reduce the risk of corrosion caused by water infiltration. However, according to our industrial experience, corrosion protection is the biggest issue for products used by the sea. After the metal is corroded, the water resistance is deemed to be poor, Waterproof becomes meaningless, regardless of how high the waterproof level has been made previously.

For this reason, it is critical that we shall choose the proper raw materials of the product and control the following manufacturing process. Efforts to this end, we have also particularly strengthened our investment in materials and processes to ensure that the products can meet the different applications of users. For instance, the battery case is water-resistant with an IP68 rating. Other companies will not put so much effort into adopting high standard process in components that cannot be seen by the naked eye of customers.
